Why is this 1 Stuiver "Bonk" coin cut in half?
During the early 19th century (specifically around 1809 under Louis Bonaparte's Kingdom of Holland), there was a severe and chronic shortage of small change in Java, Netherlands East Indies. Because the Batavian mint could not produce enough lower-denomination coins fast enough, merchants and local authorities frequently resorted to a practical solution: hacking the thick copper bar coins ("bonks") into halves or smaller pieces.
By cutting this 1 Stuiver bonk precisely in two, it could instantly be circulated and accepted in daily trade as a legal half-Stuiver coin.
