Antique Javanese Bronze Lime Container (Chunam) – 19th Century
Lot: 3839
An authentic, antique bronze/brass lime container (chunam) originating from Java, Indonesia. This pocket-sized container was an essential personal utensil used in the traditional Southeast Asian ritual of betel nut chewing (sirih pinang). It was designed to hold slaked lime, which activated the stimulant properties of the areca nut.
The heavy-cast vessel features its original attached lid secured by a rugged, hand-forged bronze chain, ensuring the cover was never lost during travel. The interior still retains a thick, authentic, and petrified layer of white lime residue from decades of historical use.
