Indonesian - Javanese Bronze Ritual Temple Bell (Ghanta) with clapper and a floral collar of an inverted lotus flower (padma) and possibly stylized Kāla or mythological elements
Lot: 3814
A fascinating ancient bronze ritual bell (ghanta), with clapper and a floral collar of an inverted lotus flower (padma) and possibly stylized Kāla or mythological elements. Discovered in East Java, Indonesia. This item dates back to the Hindu-Buddhist golden age of the region, spanning from the Singhasari to the flourishing Majapahit Empire (circa 11th–15th century).
The surface is covered in a magnificent, authentic multi-layered green and earthy patina, a characteristic result of centuries spent buried in the mineral-rich, volcanic soil of East Java.
In pre-Islamic Java, these bronze bells were vital liturgical instruments used by priests during religious ceremonies to invoke deities, accompany mantras, and ward off negative energies.
