VOC Java Heavy Tin/Lead Trial Casting and Dies strike Utrecht Duit 1790 – Hand-Carved Lion (44g) Lot: 3771
VOC Java Heavy Tin/Lead Trial Casting and Dies strike – 1790 Hand-Carved Lion & Utrecht Duit 1790 (44g)
Lot: 3771
An extraordinary numismatic artifact from the late VOC colonial era in Java, Indonesia. Weighing a massive 44.0 grams, this thick, plano-convex tin/lead specimen represents an piece history, seems to be a trial casting with a impression of a dies of the VOC 1790 Duit Utrecht, used in the manufacturing of emergency regional currency.
The reverse displays a remarkably crisp impression of the official 1790 Utrecht VOC Duit design (featuring the VOC monogram, top star privy-mark, and the date 1790). Crucially, the monogram and date appear in correct, positive readable view (not mirrored). This technically proves that this piece was struck using an actual engraved steel/iron production die rather than a circulating copper coin, making it an incredibly significant find.
The obverse displays a stylized lion cast of a single Dutch Republic Lion, shows fascinating hand-carved or hand-finished detailing, likely created by an artisan to test die depth or adapt the design for localized casting.
Maybe used to test clay/sand molds for local emergency currency, this object is an exceptional rarity.
